MISSION

The Foundation aims to promote, disseminate and assist in artistic activities in order to perpetuate the memory of Xavier Nogués.

(Article 3 of the Statutes).

BOARD OF TRUSTEES

The Foundation’s Board of Trustees members are Francesc Fontbona de Vallescar (president), Cecília Vidal i Maynou (vice-president), Ricard Mas i Peinado (secretary), Joan-Francesc Ainaud i Escudero (treasurer), Jacint Berenguer i Casal and Sandra Moliner i Nuño.

History and Main Events

* 1969 Conference by Cecília Vidal, “Xavier Nogués – Engraver”, in Encamp (Andorra). Author and journalist Josep M. Cadena appointed a new trustee and vice-president of the Foundation.

The founding members of the Foundation were Jordi Curós i Ventura (painter), Ramon Gonzàlez i Casellas, Josep Pedreira i Fernández (publisher and writer), August Testor i Permanyer and Cecília Vidal i Maynou (technical conservationist for the MNAC’s Cabinet of Drawings and Engravings). Also appointed to the Board of Trustees were: Joan Ainaud de Lasarte (Director General of the Museums of Art of Barcelona) as president; Raimon Noguera de Guzmán (notary public) as vice-president; and Oriol Bohigas i Guardiola (architect) as a board member.

* 1972 Bust cast of Xavier Nogués in bronze, an original work by Josep Dunyach, deposited in the Barcelona Museum of Modern Art (today the MNAC).

* 1973 To celebrate the centenary of Xavier Nogués’ birth, First Engraving Contest held and First Xavier Nogués Grant awarded to Jordi Cascuberta i Codinach, an artist from Olot.

* 1975 Purchase of special printing press for engravings, deposited in the Conservatory of Book Arts at Barcelona’s Escola d’Arts i Oficis Artístics.

* 1979 Publication of XXX Litografies de Xavier Nogués, printed at the Conservatory of Book Arts and curated by Cecília Vidal. In this facsimile reproduction of 30 lithographs and 16 variants, Salvador Espriu gave the following explanation in the prologue: “In 1937, the Generalitat of Catalonia (…) commissioned Xavier Nogués to create a gift for them, five unique picture books each containing 30 lithographs (…) preceded by a model prologue by Carles Riba. The great Brugalla bound the copies.”

* 1990. Publication of a bibliophile edition of La Catalunya pintoresca by Xavier Nogués. In a run of 500 copies, the book was a facsimile reproduction of 50 original drawings by Nogués. The first edition was published in 1919 by the Barcelona bookseller, Salvat-Papasseit. La Catalunya pintoresca de Xavier Nogués. És una reproducció facsímil de 50 dibuixos originals de Xavier Nogués. El tiratge fou de 500 exemplars. La primera edició és de l’any 1919, editada per Salvat-Papasseit llibreters, de Barcelona.

* 1991 Purchase of special printing press for engravings, awarded to the Escola d’Arts i Oficis in Tarragona.

Conference by Cecília Vidal, “Xavier Nogués – Engraver”, in Encamp (Andorra).

Author and journalist Josep M. Cadena appointed a new trustee and vice-president of the Foundation.

* 1995 Purchase of special printing press for engravings, awarded to the Escola de Belles Arts in Olot.

Josep Mª Cadena i Catalán appointed President of the Foundation, successor to Joan Ainaud de Lasarte.

* 1996 Appointment of new trustees Joan-Francesc Ainaud i Escudero and Francesc Fontbona de Vallescar.

* 1998 Appointment of new trustee Ricard Pedreira i Font to take the place of his father, Josep Pedreira i Fernández.

* 1999 Purchase of special printing press for engravings, awarded to the Escola d’Arts i Oficis Artístics in Vic.

Purchase of Paisatge als Establiments Maragall, an early oil on canvas by Xavier Nogués, which the Foundation agreed to deposit in the Museu Comarcal de la Garrotxa (Olot).

* 2000 Xavier Nogués Artistic Career Prize awarded to engraver and painter Joan Barbarà. The ceremony took place in the Museu Comarcal de la Garrotxa (Olot), accompanied by an exhibition of engravings by the artist. Roundtable with Josep M. Cadena, Francesc Fontbona, Jordi Curós and Cecília Vidal to close an exhibition of 32 illustrations from La Catalunya pintoresca at the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC).

* 2005 Publication of book by Joan Barbarà, De Paris a Olot. Republication of Els gravats de Xavier Nogués, originally published in 1960 by Rosa Vera.

Purchase of a portrait of Xavier Nogués, an original oil painting by Marià Pidelaserra, deposited at the Foundation’s headquarters.

* 2006 Presentation of De París a Olot by Joan Barbarà at the Bibliophile Fair held at the Hotel Majèstic in Barcelona and at the Museu d’Olot.

* 2009 Chalcographic engraving equipment given to the engraving classroom at the Escola Massana in Barcelona.

New edition of Els gravats de Xavier Nogués by Jaume Pla, with a presentation held at the Biblioteca de Catalunya by Dolors Lamarca (the library’s director), J.M. Cadena and Francesc Fontbona.

Recovery process – not accomplished – of the Xavier Nogués skylight situated in the entrance hall to the old Masia Coll, Pallejà (Barcelona). Measuring 426 x 271 x 110 cm, it was drawn and painted by Xavier Nogués with fired enamelling by Ricard Crespo.

Sponsorship of the catalogue for the Xavier Nogués Exhibition in the collections of the Biblioteca Museu Víctor Balaguer, with texts by Cecília Vidal and Mireia Rosich.

* 2012 Sponsorship of the Third Xavier Nogués Experimental Printing Seminar at the Escola Massana in Barcelona.

Publication of Les prunes del rei de França, a collection of poems about wine by Josep Pedreira with illustrations by Xavier Nogués, curated by Ricard Pedreira.

Sponsorship of the publication of Sis figurins Sis per un giravolt de maig, with texts by Cecília Vidal and J. Alemany, in collaboration with the Friends Association of the Biblioteca Museu Víctor Balaguer in Vilanova i la Geltrú (Barcelona).

* 2013 To celebrate the centenary of the birth of Espriu, publication of En homenatge a Salvador Espriu, with texts by Francesc Fontbona and Cecília Vidal.

* 2014 Sitting on the Foundation’s Board of Trustees this year were Josep Mª Cadena i Catalán (president), Francesc Fontbona de Vallescar (vice-president), Cecília Vidal i Maynou (secretary), Ricard Pedreira i Font (treasurer) and board members Oriol Bohigas i Guardiola, Jordi Curós i Ventura, Joan-Francesc Ainaud i Escudero and Jacint Berenguer i Casal.

* 2015 The Foundation continued with its sponsorships of the Experimental Seminar at the Escola Massana, the Engraving Course at the Fundació Hervás Amezcua and the Fundació Mateo Vilagrasa.

The Third Xavier Nogués Chalcographic Engraving Workshop organised by the Fundació Hervás Amezcua per a les Arts centred around wine and took place in the engraver’s own workshop.

* 2016 Sponsorship of the Seventh Xavier Nogués Experimental Printing Seminar, from 27th June to 5th July, this time for students from the Escola ISIA d’Urbino, the Escola Belli Arti d’Urbino and from the Advanced Vocational Training Course in Illustration, the Advanced Vocational Training Course in Printed Graphics and the Art and Design Degree course at the Escola Massana.

The Xavier Nogués Foundation sponsored the Fourth Xavier Nogués Chalcographic Engraving Workshop from 4th to 25th November. This year it focused on Noucentisme and was again organised by the Fundació Hervás Amezcua per a les Arts in Gavà and held in the engraver’s own workshop.

* 2018 Appointment of new trustee Sandra Moliner i Nuño, architect.
